2020 marks the 25 year anniversary of Steel Blue.
Inspired by how sports shoes had made leaps and bounds in design and performance, five working directors (Brian Piggott, Nev Hurring, Ross Fitzgerald, Colin Jorgensen and Peter Nichols) joined forces to set-up Steel Blue in 1995.
Steel Blue’s first Head Office and Manufacturing facilities was based in Bassendean, Western Australia.
After the growth in the brand as a market leader, Steel Blue moved to custom-built premises in Malaga, Western Australia, in 2001 which is still the home of Steel Blue to this day. This Head Office houses the Perth based team, including our warehouse and manufacturing facilities.
To celebrate Steel Blue’s 25 years, we shine the light on one of our Founders, Ross Fitzgerald.

Ross is one of Steel Blue’s Founding Directors, starting the iconic Western Australian company back in 1995. From day one, Ross and our Founding Directors were determined to develop the world’s most comfortable work boot.
Ross currently manages our Australian and New Zealand Sales Team, helping ensure Steel Blue boots are readily available and are fit-for-purpose for all trades.
Ross’ key moment in Steel Blue’s history: “In 2003, we made some major product changes including increasing the width and height of the toe cap and making a thicker midsole and outsole to take the underfoot comfort to the next level. This was a shock initially to our Distributors but these changes revolutionised the safety footwear industry and has been a driving force to Steel Blue’s success. From day one, we’ve been a business that’s been prepared to take risks to deliver the world’s most comfortable work boots.”
Fun fact about Ross: he is also a Swan Districts Football Club Legend, playing for the WAFL club 1977-1982, 1986-87.
To this day, Steel Blue has continued to support the Swan Districts Football Club and their work in the community. Steel Blue is a proud Major Partner of the Swan Districts Football Club and naming right sponsor for the Steel Blue Oval in Bassendean, Western Australia.
