Guess which Steel Blue boot is known as Nipaluna?
We’re proud that the majority of Steel Blue boots are named after cities and towns across Australia. In honour of NAIDOC week, the 4th to the 11th of July, we are shining the light on the First Nations names for these areas and regions.
NAIDOC week is “an opportunity for all Australians to come together to celebrate the rich history, diverse cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the oldest continuing cultures on the planet.”
The theme for the 2021 NAIDOC celebrations is ‘Heal Country!’ which “calls for all of us to continue to seek greater protections for our lands, our waters, our sacred sites and our cultural heritage from exploitation, desecration, and destruction.”
@10perth has shared a great reference to the traditional names of some of the popular cities and areas of Australia.
Our Garramilla (guh-ruh-mil-lah) or Darwin safety boot and the Tarndanya (tarn-dan-yuh) or Adelaide are Men’s sports lace-up style shoes. These styles are ideal for Courier Drivers, Warehouse Workers and Stadium Crew. Both the Garramilla and Tarndanya feature a Composite Toe Cap, TPU Outsole that is heat resistant to 130°C and Anti-Static properties.
The Nipaluna (nip-uh-loo-nuh), otherwise known as the Hobart is our popular Pull-On work boot. Made from premium high-quality leather that’s ethically and environmentally sourced from members of the Leather Working Group (LWG), the Nipaluna is available in Wheat, Sand, Black and Winter Brown. The Nipaluna is a versatile style that is available in the Ladies range, Soft Toe, with or without a Bump Cap or Penetration Resistant Midsole. See the Nipaluna (Hobart) range here.
The Steel Blue head office and manufacturing facility proudly sits in Malaga, Perth which is known as Boorloo (boo-r-loo). The Indigenous term for other town and city names are:
- Cairns = Gimuy (gim-oii)
- Sunshine Coast = Kabi Kabi (kah-bee kah-bee)
- Brisbane = Meanjin (mee-an-jun)
- Gold Coast = Yugambeh (yoog-umm-beh)
- Sydney = Warrang (wuhr-ung)
- Canberra = Ngambri Ngunnawal (nam-bree noon-a-waal)
