A passionate group of lady tradies are lifting others up by their pink and purple bootstraps in support of Steel Blue and Breast Cancer Care WA’s partnership.

Leading Australian safety boot manufacturer, Steel Blue, is celebrating its 15-year partnership with Breast Cancer Care WA by doubling donations from sales of its ladies fit pink and purple boots to $20 throughout the month of May. To date, Steel Blue has raised over $1.6 million to aid breast cancer care support services. Over 160,000 pink and purple charity boots have been sold, meaning the total combined capacity of the MCG and Optus stadiums are walking around in a pair of pink or purple Steel Blue boots in support of breast cancer awareness.

To support this year’s campaign a group of women from blue collar industries have donned pink and purple boots and are championing the message, ‘a real lady (tradie) always checks her equipment’.

Steel Blue CEO, Garry Johnson, praised the work done by Breast Cancer Care WA and shared why he felt giving back to charity was one of the best choices they have made over the last 15 years.

“We are incredibly proud of our longstanding partnership with Breast Cancer Care WA. They have helped so many through the work they do providing free of charge specialist breast care nursing, counselling, and financial hardship support. Every dollar donated to Breast Cancer Care WA returns $4.43 worth of social value with more than 1,300 families supported in 2021.”

"We are investing in lives and helping people in a very practical way through our partnership with Breast Cancer Care WA."

Breast Cancer Care WA CEO, Zoe McAlpine, highlighted the importance of the relationship between Steel Blue and the charity, with thousands of people and their families directly benefitting from the partnership over the years.

“Our partnership with Steel Blue holds a special place in our hearts as their steadfast generosity has allowed us to support so many people through their breast cancer diagnosis, treatment and beyond at no cost to them. This kind of support has such a powerful impact on our clients, and we just wouldn’t be able to do it without our wonderful corporate partners.

“We are also grateful for Steel Blue’s help in raising awareness of early detection of breast cancer, because early detection dramatically improves survival rates.”

In addition to donating to Breast Cancer Care with each sale of pink and purple boots, Steel Blue includes a shower tag in the packaging of the boots outlining how to perform a breast self-check to look for abnormalities which could indicate cancer.

These shower tags have found their way into the homes of tens of thousands of women and have, we hope, encouraged many to preform regular breast checks.

Jen Warburton, breast cancer survivor and Founder of Lucinda’s Everlastings, shared how Breast Cancer Care WA helped her and why she is stepping up beside Steel Blue in support of the ‘What a pair’ campaign and breast cancer awareness.

“Steel Blue has done a great job with its ongoing support for Breast Cancer Care. The funding helps people, and their loved ones, impacted by breast cancer access practical, emotional and financial support through Breast Cancer Care WA, which does not go unnoticed.”

“I am true testament to this support, being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021 and utilising the amazing services throughout my treatment. I am truly very appreciative for the Steel Blue support of this not-for-profit agency.”

“Early detection is key! More education, communication and conversation surrounding regular breast checks is needed and it is so important. One in seven women will experience being diagnosed with breast cancer before the age of 85 and having this knowledge and education is critical. I am very fortunate to have had access to the Breast Screen WA van to diagnose my cancer, but I am in full support of any encouragement or information that can lead to people being diagnosed before it is too late.”
