SAFETY GUIDE: regulations keep builders going.
Safety is key to a successful working day.
Safety regulations are in place to keep Builders and other Tradespeople going throughout the working day.
According to the HSE report, Kinds of Accident Statistics in Great Britain 2020, “slips, trips and falls account for a third of UK injuries.”
Slips, trips & falls account for one third of UK injuries in the workplace.
Safety regulations are in place to keep builders going. Do you know what makes a safe boot?
Safety footwear, as with all types of PPE – is an important line of defence on building sites when all other measures have been taken to reduce risks. There are many hazards to consider: electrostatic build-up, slip and trip hazards, cuts, punctures, falling objects, wet worksites, metal and chemical splash, abrasion and so may other everyday incidents.
Any issues with your feet can throw your entire body out of alignment, causing pain and discomfort. With every step, your footwear absorbs up to twice your bodyweight in force. That is why having supportive, comfortable, fit-for-purpose boots is so important for your overall well-being. Happier feet mean less injuries, less body fatigue and more productivity.
What makes a safe boot?
It’s important to check for 3 key things when searching for a safe boot, that is fit for purpose.
1: Does it meet the legal requirements?
Do a quick check for the CE certification and the EN ISO 20345:2011 standard. This can be found on the tongue of most safety boots.
2: Is it fit-for-purpose?
Safety boots carry a simple two or three letter code; entry-level models are SB which indicates that they offer toe protection. Furthermore:
- S1: SB + Anti-static & fully enclosed energy absorbing heel area
- S1P: S1 + Puncture resistant mid-sole
- S2: S1 + Water resistance
- S3, the highest safety standard: S2 + Puncture resistant mid-sole & cleated outsole for slip resistance.
For construction sites you are safe with an S3 boot: Anti-static & fully enclosed energy absorbing heel area, completely water resistant with a puncture resistant sole. All Steel Blue boots meet S3 requirements. View Steel Blue S3 safety boots here.
3: Usability and comfort
Correct fit, comfort and flexibility are key to a safe, secure and comfortable fitting safety boot. A boot with a minimum height covering the ankle that can be tied with laces, helps reduce the risk of rolling and spraining the ankle, while an added zip offers ease of access.
