Safety tips for apprentices and students looking to excel in 2023
In this three-part series, we’re looking at the next generation of skilled workers from different angles. First up is apprentices, and in particular a look at safety on the job.
There’s a lot to learn when embarking on a new apprenticeship. However, one core competency spans industries, trades, countries and cultures: safety.
According to recent estimates, there were over 415,000 apprentices and trainees in Australia in June 2022, up 21.6% from a year earlier. More than 264,000 trade apprentices and trainees picked up tools for the first time.
Why is safety important for apprentices and trainees?
Safety will always be a priority
As you build a successful career and progress through the ranks, safety becomes an increasingly significant part of the job. Internalising good safety practices early on sets you up for future success.
One slip-up can cause serious injury
Taking shortcuts can end your career before it’s started. From safety boots to power tools, it’s your responsibility to look after yourself.
Safety looks good on your CV
Strong safety knowledge makes you appealing to employers and trustworthy as a leader. Look for opportunities to gain safety experience, such as training courses and certificates.
Who is responsible for safety on site?
Employers have a duty of care to maintain a safe workplace, but safety is ultimately an individual responsibility.
Here’s a quick guide to safety responsibilities for trainees and apprentices.

How apprentice tradies and trainees can stay safe while they learn the trade
Wear appropriate PPE
You might think that power tools or heavy equipment present the biggest safety risks. But slips, trips and falls are still the most common workplace injury. Steel Blue lightweight work boots with slip-resistant soles prevent slips and improve mobility on uneven terrain.
Brad McEwan, a wakeboarder-turned-apprentice who now owns a hugely successful construction company in Victoria, learned the importance of high-quality work boots the hard way.
“I did the typical thing as an apprentice and I just bought a pair of cheap boots to wear to work for the first time,” he said.
“They were slip-ons. I just hated them. They were so uncomfortable. At the start of my apprenticeship we were framing full-time, so I was on the roof, flat out. They were terrible.”
Clean up after yourself
Maintaining a tidy work environment is an effective way to reduce safety risks for your team. Before leaving a work area – even for a short break – look around to identify and remove potential hazards.
Get enough rest
Learning a new trade can be tiring. Make sure to get a full night’s sleep, stretch throughout the day, and take regular breaks. You can’t afford to lose focus on the job.
Don’t cut corners
Perseverance, hard work and attention to detail are key ingredients for excellence. Keep yourself accountable and ensure you’re investing in the right tools for the job – including the most comfortable work boots.
Look out for your mates
Safety is everyone’s responsibility. Keep an eye on your teammates, and don’t be afraid to speak out if you notice something that doesn’t seem right.
